Fix a blurry profile picture

Most blurry profile pictures are a crop. People zoom into a group photo to isolate their face, and the face that is left may be only 200 or 300 pixels wide. The platform then shows it larger on your profile page, and it looks soft.

The second cause is a copy of a copy. A photo that was sent through a chat app, saved, edited in another app and then uploaded has been compressed several times. Blocks appear around the face, skin looks patchy and edges get halos. The platform compresses it once more on upload.

The third cause is the original photo. Front cameras in dim rooms produce grain, and the phone's noise reduction smooths it into a waxy look that does not survive further compression.

Use the original photo from your phone's camera roll, not a copy from a chat or a download from social media. Crop it to a square before uploading, with your face filling most of the frame, so the platform does not crop it for you. Leave some space around your head, because most platforms show profile pictures as a circle.

Upload from the platform's own app or website, and avoid uploading a screenshot of a photo, which adds another round of scaling and compression.

Match the model to the problem. If the photo is grainy from a dim room, or blocky and smeared from being passed around in chats, use Enhance. It removes noise and compression damage at the same size and adds natural fine texture where the photo had lost it.
